Expanded Members Area
East Coast Area Old Gaffers Association

Join the Gaffers!
East Coast Situations Vacant
Your local East coast area of the OGA is run by a small committee of dedicated members, who give freely of their time to organise the social and sailing events which you enjoy through the year, as well as looking after the area finances and mundane things like handicapping, producing the area website and Eastcoaster. The present committee is a convivial and harmonious bunch who so enjoy putting something back into the local Association, that they have all volunteered to stand again next year. However, the work-load doesn't get any less and they would like to hear from any member who would like to fill one of the following positions:

Minute secretary; to attend committee meetings, summarise the proceedings and produce and distribute minutes by e-mail.

Sailing sub-committee member; to assist in the running of sailing events, mainly the calculation of handicaps and race results. (The Area has its own dedicated lap-top for this purpose).

Ordinary committee member; to take an active part in committee meetings and assist the various sub-committees in their work from time to time.

If you would like to join us, have a word with any committee member or
e-mail Pete Thomas our Area President on p.m.thomas@talk21.com

Meetings are held about every other month at the Stour SC in Manningtree – and there is a bar!

Sculling Challenge Completed!
Pete and Paul finished their marathon scull from Woodbridge to Mistley at about 17:50 on Sunday night June 26th. They reported an easy journey down the River Deben to Felixstowe Ferry in spite of a strong headwind blowing force four.

But when they looked out to sea the giant waves forced a delay until low tide.
Pete reported that, when they did venture out to take the flood down to Felixstowe, South Atlantic style waves created their biggest challenge yet for the leg off-shore into Harwich Harbour and the River Stour.

They decided to stay overnight at Harwich and make passage up the Stour on Sunday. The day dawned bright and hot but with a gentle breeze to help the boys up the river. The mini fleet and support boat crewed by Howard and Sue were spotted off Wrabness making good way at 16:00, but they were forced to drastically alter course to avoid grounding on the early flood.

A small but enthusiastic crowd was at Mistley Quay to greet the boys as they hove into view shortly before six o'clock. Both Pete and Paul appeared to be in good shape apart from some blisters on their hands!

They were very pleased with the £1,500+ raised for the Free the Quay campaign

Reg White's 'Rock' unveiled 29/05/2011
A large crowd gathered on the Hard at Brightlingsea to watch the White family uncover Reg's new memorial for the first time. Robert, Reg's son, made an emotial speech thanking all concerned especially Graham Adams who had organised the appeal to raise fund for the memorial.

The highly polished slate "wing" features all Reg's major achievements including his Olympic Gold Medal. The design brought memories flooding back of Reg's advanced "Wing" mast catamarans used to defend the Little Americas Cup.

The crowd included his extended family and also John Osborn, his former Olympic crew, who had flown over especially from Canada.

The "Rock" can be seen at the entrance to the Brightlingsea Public Jetty
